The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the community which grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a serious industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, plus its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
