Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the commune that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, producing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its nearness to the capital, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
