Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous presumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, yet it is still a flourishing and developing town today, mostly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus the quality rail and road communications.
