The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the village that evolved round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, plus its superb rail and road connections.
