Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed witches.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed, yet it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific road and rail communications.
