The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community that grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were accordingly hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed, but it continues to be a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, plus the outstanding road and rail links.

The town is located near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 miles from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
