Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its nearness to the capital, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital.
