Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the community that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were later hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a serious industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry went bust, but it remains a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, and its outstanding rail and road communications.
