River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement that developed round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered serious decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail communications.
