The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the commune which developed surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, plus the first class road and rail connections.
