The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the settlement which evolved around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its plants closed, though it is still a successful and developing town today, principally due to the nearness to London, plus the exceptional road and rail connections.
