Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

A Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road links.
