Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,500 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

A Saxon encampment followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were consequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many presumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings.
