Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the village that evolved around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its nearness to the city of london, and the good road and rail links.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
