River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the community which grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many supposed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its plants closed, though it is still a flourishing and booming town today, largely because of its closeness to the capital, and the first rate road and rail communications.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
