Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a vital manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it remains a successful and developing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the first class rail and road connections.

The town is set beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
