Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed down, though it still is a successful and booming town today, principally because of its proximity to London, plus its superb rail and road connections.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
