Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the commune which grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, and its terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
