Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a population of around 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the commune that evolved around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, making items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
