It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its plants shut down, in spite of this it still is a thriving and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.
