Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the community that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road links.

Chelmsford is situated beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
