A Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it still is a successful and growing town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road communications.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
