The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the village which evolved in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry shut down, nonetheless it still is a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, and its exceptional rail and road connections.
