The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune that evolved in the vicinity of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a vital manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, although it still is a thriving and expanding town today, mainly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its quality rail and road connections.

The town lies beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
