An Anglo Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, making products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, even so it still is a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to its nearness to London, and the quality road and rail connections.
