River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community which expanded surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its production facilities closed, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, principally due to the close proximity to London, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
