River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which developed surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit several times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its factories closed down, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road communications.
