Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered significant decline in the 1980's, as much of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its first class rail and road connections.

The town sits close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
