Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it is still a successful and booming town today, primarily due to the closeness to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road links.
