The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the village which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were later executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry shut down, though it still is a successful and developing town today, largely due to the close proximity to the capital, and the good road and rail links.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
