The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment which evolved round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, principally due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the exceptional rail and road links.

Chelmsford stands adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
