Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of about thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of around 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the terrific rail and road connections.

The town lies just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
