The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, around 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
