Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune which evolved surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, making items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail links.
