River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its nearness to London, and its superb road and rail links.

The town is found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
