Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, largely because of its closeness to London, plus the outstanding rail and road links.

The town can be found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
