The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the town which developed in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless assumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its factories closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its first class rail and road communications.

The town is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
