Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which developed around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, because much of its plants went bust, all the same it is still a flourishing and developing town today, principally due to the proximity to London, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town is set beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
