The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its manufacturing plants closed, yet it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, and its quality rail and road connections.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London.
