Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village which developed round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the closeness to London, plus its superb road and rail links.

The town sits near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
