Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of around 32 mls from central London. The town has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its manufacturing facilities went bust, all the same it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the capital, plus its first class road and rail communications.
