The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, principally due to its nearness to London, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
