Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the commune which evolved in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were consequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry went bust, nevertheless it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to London, plus its excellent rail and road connections.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
