The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the village that expanded around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were later executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a vital industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, primarily because of its proximity to London, and its quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
