The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement which developed surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, crafting such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered significant decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it remains a successful and growing town today, principally due to the close proximity to London, and the outstanding road and rail links.

The town can be found near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
