The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of around thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town which developed surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London.
