River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the community which grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed down, all the same it remains a thriving and growing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the centre of the capital.
