Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement that expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many supposed witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant industrial town in the 19th C, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, plus its terrific rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
