River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the community that evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were subsequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many supposed witches.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its factories closed down, though it continues to be a successful and booming town today, mainly due to its closeness to London, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 kilometres from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
