The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a populace of approximately 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the settlement which developed surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th century, producing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its factories went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to its closeness to London, plus its quality rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
