Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its plants shut down, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, principally due to its proximity to London, plus the terrific road and rail connections.
