The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it still is a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, and the superb road and rail communications.
