A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, making such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its manufacturers closed, nonetheless it remains a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the city of london, plus its quality rail and road links.
