The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into considerable decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it still is a flourishing and booming town today, principally due to its close proximity to London, and its exceptional road and rail communications.
