River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment which evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, when much of its industries ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, largely because of its proximity to London, plus the superb rail and road communications.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
