The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered significant decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed down, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, and the exceptional road and rail connections.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
