Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, crafting items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry closed down, though it still is a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the nearness to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail links.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
