River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town that evolved in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, making products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its plants went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
