The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.
