The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of about 110,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its closeness to London, plus the excellent rail and road communications.
