An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry closed down, however it is still a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the nearness to London, and the terrific rail and road links.

The town is found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
