The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry closed down, however it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its closeness to the capital, plus the excellent rail and road communications.

The town can be found beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
