Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its plants went bust, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road communications.
