The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the village that expanded in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and developing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail communications.

The town lies just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 kilometers from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
