A Saxon community followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry closed, although it is still a thriving and expanding town today, principally because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the exceptional road and rail links.
