Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of approximately thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement which evolved around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry closed, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to London, and the good rail and road communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
