Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its production facilities shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and its first class road and rail connections.
