The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the commune which expanded round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industrial facilities went bust, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the nearness to London, and the first class rail and road links.
