Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the village which expanded round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industry went bust, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to its nearness to London, and its first rate road and rail communications.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
