The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of some 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, for the most part because of its closeness to the capital, plus its outstanding road and rail communications.
