River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its factories closed down, in spite of this it remains a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road links.
