The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and growing town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its superb rail and road communications.
