A Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and growing town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its superb rail and road communications.
