It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the settlement which grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were later put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
