River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement which developed round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, yet it is still a successful and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail communications.
