The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the settlement which grew up in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, predominantly because of its proximity to London, and the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
