The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. The 17th Cent saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected witches.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.
