The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, around 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of roughly 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

A Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, crafting items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its excellent road and rail communications.
