The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of around thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its manufacturers closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to the proximity to London, and the terrific road and rail links.
