The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize.
