The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of around thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the area of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its factories closed, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the quality rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
