The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.
