Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of roughly 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune which evolved surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its production facilities closed, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, largely due to its proximity to the capital, plus the first rate rail and road links.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
