River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, largely because of its nearness to London, and the first class road and rail communications.
