The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the town that expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed, yet it remains a thriving and expanding town today, principally because of its nearness to London, and the first class road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
