Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.
