The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the community which expanded around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industrial facilities closed down, all the same it still is a successful and developing town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
