The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading culprits were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, and the terrific rail and road connections.

Chelmsford can be found just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
