Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the town that expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th C, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industrial facilities closed, though it is still a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to its nearness to the city of london, and its first rate road and rail connections.

The town is located just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
