The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the settlement which evolved in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the good road and rail communications.

The town is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 km car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
