Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a populace of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to London, and the good road and rail communications.
