The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were later put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.
