The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were later put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, principally because of its closeness to the capital, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London.
