Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main agitators were consequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industries ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the good road and rail communications.

Chelmsford lies just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London.
