River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
