The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, nevertheless it still is a successful and booming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to London, plus its good rail and road communications.
