Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
