Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of around 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the encampment that evolved surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it still is a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road connections.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
