The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.
