Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the community that developed surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, when much of its industries closed, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mainly because of its nearness to London, and the quality rail and road communications.

The town is set just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
