River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the commune that evolved surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industries ceased to be profitable, all the same it remains a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its terrific road and rail communications.

The town is found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
