Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 111,500 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, for the most part because of its nearness to London, and its quality rail and road communications.

The town lies close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
