Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industries closed down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to London, and the first class road and rail communications.
