The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of about 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the community that evolved in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its production facilities shut down, yet it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail connections.

The town sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
