The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into significant decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a successful and developing town today, primarily because of its proximity to the capital, plus the quality rail and road communications.

The town is located beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
