Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the community that evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its plants shut down, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and its superb road and rail communications.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
