Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon camp followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road communications.
