Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, plus its first class rail and road communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
