The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the community that expanded in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturing plants shut down, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, and its good road and rail links.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
