The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the village that grew up in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry went bust, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, principally due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.
