The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the commune that evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were consequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless suspected witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry closed, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part due to its proximity to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail links.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
