Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the village that expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its manufacturers closed down, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the exceptional road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
