The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of about 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the commune which grew up in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed, however it still is a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, plus its outstanding road and rail links.

The town can be found beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
