The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of roughly 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the commune which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its nearness to the capital, and the superb rail and road links.
