The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th century, making items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, largely because of its closeness to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road connections.

The town can be found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
