The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were later put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless assumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry shut down, although it remains a successful and expanding town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road links.
