The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the community which developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its manufacturers closed, although it is still a thriving and blooming town today, principally due to its closeness to London, plus the first class road and rail communications.
