The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement that developed in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous alleged witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, although it is still a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its excellent rail and road communications.
