Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry shut down, even so it still is a successful and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail communications.
