The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the commune which evolved round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry shut down, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the quality rail and road links.

Chelmsford is found beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometers from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
