The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry closed down, yet it still is a flourishing and booming town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
