Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the first century AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to London, and its good rail and road communications.
