The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of around 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a significant manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its production facilities closed, even so it continues to be a successful and booming town today, mainly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
