The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune that evolved surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town in the 19th century, crafting such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, and the quality road and rail communications.

The town is set close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
